A TROPHY founded in memory of a stalwart of Darlington youth football has been presented for the first time.

Brian Bowley, who died earlier this year, was involved in football around the town for most of his life and was well known to players as someone who would always give a helping hand.

As caretaker of Eastbourne School he helped to form the school’s youth teams and was also involved with Spraire Lads, who play at South Park.

Club members at Spraire Lads decided to start an award in Mr Bowley’s memory, and used money collected at his funeral to buy a trophy in his honour.

The Brian Bowley memorial award was presented for the first time by his sister, Sheila, to twins Zak and Ben Turvitt, who play for Spraire Lads under-21s.

Zak has played 201 consecutive games for the club, while Ben has played 200.

Sean Hogg, a friend of Mr Bowley, who helped to arrange the trophy, said: “The presentation went very well. All the lads knew Brian, he was well loved.”
