A DARLINGTON school has been awarded £50,000 to secure the future of its playing fields.

Longfield Academy of Sport has been given the funding as part of Sport England’s Olympic legacy programme.

It will be used to improve the drainage of four football pitches.

Headteacher Susan Johnson said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our pitches to ensure maximum usage of our facilities from partner clubs.

“This will ensure that partner clubs, local junior town and district teams have access to pitches which currently have a history of drainage problems.”

Sport England’s chairman Richard Lewis said: “Thanks to this investment, generations of young people in Darlington can look forward to playing sport on great sports pitches.

“Playing fields are vital sporting resources for local communities so it’s vital that we provide both investment and protection.”
