A TUTOR at Darlington College was invited to meet the Duchess of Cambridge during her visit to the North-East last week after being nominated for the Keyfund Facilitator of the Year award.

It follows Ali Wright's work as a Pathways tutor and Keyfund facilitator, supporting and providing grants to Pathways students at Darlington College who organise and control their own projects.

Once a successful project is completed, students can then go on to apply for up to £1,000 and £2,000 to fund projects which will benefit the community.

So far Darlington College has had 18 Keyfund groups and have carried out 34 projects.

As tutor of these projects, Ms Wright aims to teach students key literacy, numeracy and budgeting and health and safety skills.

The 53-year-old said: “We have had some amazing projects and I always say thank you to them after every project as they take me on these trips and they do all the hard work."

She will find out on Thursday (October 18) if she has won the award.

On meeting the Duchess of Cambridge, she added: “We were all expecting to curtsey and call her 'Your Highness' but she was very laid back, she spent a lot of time with young people and they all said she was fab.”

Keyfund is one of the 26 charities which Prince William and Kate chose to donate money to at their wedding last year.
