AN arts groups that gives aspiring writers the chance to test their work in public has launched its autumn programme.

The Open Mic Nights, supported by Darlington for Culture, are now held at the Voodoo Cafe in Skinnergate, Darlington, following the closure of the Arts Centre and meet on the last Thursday of each month.

The event covers all writing genres, including prose, poetry, drama and film scripts, with each writer given an eight minute slot to air their piece.

The Autumn programme will start on Thursday, which will have an open theme.

The October meeting will have a ‘pen’ theme, while the November session will also have an open theme.

John Dean, group organiser and chairman of Darlington for Culture said: “Writers, like so many other artists, were bitterly disappointed when the council closed the Arts Centre. However, we now have a new home and are sure the atmosphere will be as good as ever.

“When the nights ran at the Arts Centre, they provided a stage for some outstanding talent and we are sure they will continue to do so.”

Each session starts at 7pm and costs £3 on the door.
