A BURGLAR ran off with items of jewellery after a woman in her mid-80s discovered him in her home.
The woman found the man ransacking her bedroom when she returned to her home in Dickinson Street, off Yarm Road, Darlington, at 5pm on Wednesday.
A police spokesman said: “She was startled to find a man in her home who had ransacked her bedroom.”
After the burglar fled, the woman found he had taken a number of items of costume jewellery, including a ring and a watch.
Detective Constable Nev Price of Darlington CID said: “This was a very distressing experience for a vulnerable elderly woman. We’re making every effort to find the person responsible and are carrying out a number of inquiries in the area.”
The suspect was 5ft 10in with short cropped fair hair and a round face. He was clean shaven and wearing dark clothing.
