PLANS for allotments in a Darlington village to become self-managed are progressing well.
At its latest meeting, Middleton St George Parish Council heard that a meeting of the village allotments steering group was being held on January 30, 2012, where it was hoped a committee would be elected to manage the plots.
Once this happens, the allotment committee could open a bank account and it was hoped they could be fully self-managed by March 2012.
A formal agreement between the parish council and the allotments committee is being drafted and it was hoped this would be signed in time for the January meeting.
The council chairwoman, Coun Doris Jones said: "I'm happy that they're going to start managing themselves. So many of these are going on in Darlington and they're all self-managed, and doing fantastic.
"When we get this agreement we need to scrutinise it and perhaps get the borough solicitor to look at it, because they will still be our tenants. We'll still be here in the background and still have responsibility for them."
