ACCOMPLISHED secondary school students were recognised last night at an awards ceremony attended by Darlington's MP.

Guest speaker Jenny Chapman MP presented awards to pupils at Hummersknott School in various categories, including for the highest marks in GCSE subjects, music grades, subject awards and for those in each school house.

In the year 11 subject prize category, for those who had gained the highest mark in their GCSE subjects, winners included Catherine Ashdown for English language, geography, chemistry and physics, Emily Bagshaw for French and German, Sam King for drama, and Thomas Wilson for mathematics.

Diana Betteridge and Thomas Harper were joint winners for The Linda Thomas Award, given to students for persistent endeavour to improve writing skills and Catherine Lucas was given the L F Gordon prize, named after a former headteacher, for sport and service to the school.

Lilli Broadbent was given The Rajkiran Trophy, given to an upper school student who has overcome personal difficulties, and Jodie Purves received The Lady Dale Scholarship for a female student who overcame difficulty to proceed to further education.

The College Championship Cup was awarded to Cuthbert College and collected by the college captain.
