DESPITE suffering a stroke only four weeks ago, Phyllis Wilson was in high spirits as she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Family and friends of the centenarian gathered at the Avalon Cafe, in Darlington, to enjoy a birthday party.
Mrs Wilson's son, Colin, who takes care of her full-time, said: "We were worried about her yesterday. She was unwell on Thursday and we didn't think she was going to make it to the party.
"She still doesn't feel great, but she wanted to get to the cafe to celebrate her birthday."
Mrs Wilson was born in Cockerton in 1911 and has spent her entire life in the Darlington area.
"She has worked so hard, " said Mr Wilson. "She brought four boys up by herself. I can remember times when she was working two full-time jobs - they didn't have hand-outs back then.
"From a young age she also brought her siblings up as her parents were both disabled. To say she's worked hard throughout her life would be an understatement.
"She has enjoyed her retirement, though, and only really got to relax in her later years."
Mrs Wilson has five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
