A POPULAR music centre which has endured trials and tribulations during the past year is set for expansion.

The Forum, in Borough Road, Darlington, is launching a Mediterranean-themed garden later this month with the help of rock band The Skybabies.

The venue, which attracts hundreds of music lovers, nearly closed last year.

However, following an unprecedented show of support, new funding helped it to stay open.

Earlier this year, community interest company Humantics was formed to take over the venue.

Now two local companies, Paddock Farm, a garden centre in Dalton-on-Tees, and Glenwood Paints have transformed the backyard at the venue into an outdoor area which can host live music performances and garden parties.

It has a stage, water feature, bistro tables, plants and a wet weather canopy.

As well as the launch night on June 25, other events planned include a Caribbean reggae night, on July 22, and a folk music evening in August.

Allison McKay, director of The Forum, said: "This is going to be a fun event. We are thrilled to be opening the garden and are delighted with all the hard work that Paddock Farm has done.

"It's great to welcome back the Skybabies, who always receive a great response from the crowd."

Janet Binney, owner of Paddock Farm, said: "We jumped at the chance to work on this project as we love to help out the local community.

"We are honoured that the garden has been named after Paddock Farm and are looking forward to enjoying its summer music events."

The family launch event starts at 5pm. There will be a barbecue and a performance by the Skybabies.

Tickets are £5 for adults and £3.50 for under-17s. Children, aged 14 to 17, are welcome to the gig with an adult, from 5pm to 7.30pm.
