A WOMAN who wants to reopen a former social club has vowed to work closely with neighbours.
Experienced publican Bernice Smith wants to reopen the Victoria Social Club, above, in Victoria Road, Darlington as "an old-fashioned boozer".
Ms Smith's application for a licence to run the venue will be heard by members of Darlington Borough Council's licensing committee on Friday.
She had initially applied to open the pub - to be called the Old Vic - from 10am to 1am and wanted to be able to put on karaoke, live music and recorded music.
However, after representations from neighbours she has brought forward the requested closing time to 11.30pm, and has not applied to put on music.
She said: "If the objectors claim it is such a big built-up area then I'm happy that there are only six complaints and I'm also more than happy to work with them to resolve any issues. I have already compromised quite a lot. I don't want to upset anyone because they are my potential customers and I just want to get this open."
She will open the venue as a pub rather than a social club with the same entry on the side of the building.
The pub would be on the first floor of the building, with a full-size snooker table on the second floor, and darts and dominoes also available.
Friday's hearing takes place at 9.30am in the town hall. It is open to the public.
