BOWLERS in Darlington are celebrating after the purchase of new equipment to help more people participate in the sport.

Yesterday, Darlington's MP Jenny Chapman joined bowlers at North Park for an introduction to the game.

Mrs Chapman bowled the first wood in a friendly tournament at the bowling green in the park.

The tournament coincided with the award of a £1,500 grant from the County Durham Foundation which has helped Darlington Parks' Bowls Association to purchase equipment which beginners can borrow to get started in the game.

Mrs Chapman said: "I think bowlings a wonderful way to spend your time and in Darlington there's a strong bowling fraternity and I'll do anything I can to help support them and improve their facilities."

Terry Beer, the treasurer of the association, said that the grant was very welcome as bowling clubs in the town had just had their funding cut because of public sector cutbacks, leaving a number of clubs facing an uncertain future.

He said: "It's such an easy sport and w'ed love to see much more people take part.

"We're looking to manage the greens on our own and so any funding we can get is very welcome."

Anybody interested in trying bowling can come along to an open day at the green at North Park between 1pm and 3.30pm on Mondays.
