Darlington'S Wembley winning goalscorer, Chris Senior, was released by the club this afternoon, just hours before the club's victory parade.
Senior scored the last-gasp goal against Mansfield to win the FA Trophy and secure the first piece of silverware in two decades. But as thousands of fans turned out last night to greet their heroes in the towns Market Place, Senior was expressing his frustrations on the social networking site, Twitter.
"Darlo's 1st trophy in 20 years and this is how you get repaid. Ha ha sums the place up. Sorry fans.
Released. Joke. See you," he wrote.
Earlier in the day an article on Quakers' official website told how Senior was hopeful of remaining at the club after cementing his place in Darlington folklore.
The 29-year-old said: "Whether I sign a new deal or not that moment will live with me forever.
"It's been a bit of a frustrating season for me, really, with a couple of niggling injuries, then when I was fully fit the lads were doing well so I was finding it hard to get into the side.
"But I'd like to sign a new deal and stay at the club. The gaffer will have his plans and his one aim is to win promotion next season and Id love to play a part in that."
Senior said he had a strong bond with the Darlington fans, some of whom had conferred legendary status upon him.
"If people want to say that about me, that's lovely," he said. "I was just in the right place at the right time and I'm proud that the goal brought so much happiness and jubilation to so many people.
"I've loved being at Darlington, and I'd like to think I already had quite a good relationship with our fans. But what happened at the weekend has made that bond even stronger.
"I definitely want it to continue next season, but if it's not to be then at last I've got some fantastic memories."
