CAMPAIGNERS hoping to get speed limits in Darlington reduced to 20mph have published a list of roads which would be excluded.

The 20's Plenty for Darlington campaigners want the town to follow numerous towns and cites, including Hartlepool and Portsmouth, in introducing the default limit on predominately residential roads.

The campaign would excludemajor residential roads, including radial and circulatory roads, as well as Lingfield Point, Morton Park and Faverdale Industrial Estate.

The campaigners, who have a Facebook following, also say that, according to Department of Transport guidelines, traffic calming measures such as speed bumps would not be a legal requirement if the limit was the default.

However, Durham Police have yet to confirm whether or not they would support a 20mph limit without traffic calming measures.

Schemes in other areas, such as Hartlepool, which is served by Cleveland Police, have the default limit without traffic calming.

Matthew Snedker, who is leading the campaign, said reducing the default speed limit would save lives, make communities more pleasant and encourage more walking and cycling.

"The title of the campaign is 'Save money, save fuel, save lives', " he said.

"We feel that introducing 20mph limits on all residential roads -without traffic calming measures -will reduce road casualties, make the borough a safer, more pleasant place to live, while cutting noise and air pollution, reducing fuel consumption and saving Darlington a lot of money each year."

He said reducing speed from 30mph to 20mph only added two minutes to a twomile journey.

A Darlington Borough Council spokeswoman said: "We implement 20mph zones under current Department of Transport guidance, which requires physical measures such as road humps. However, we would consider any changes to the Department of Transport's guidance."
