COUNCILLORS will meet next week to discuss how cuts planned by Darlington Borough Council will impact on their departments.

Four scrutiny committee meetings are planned to discuss cuts in public spending.

It follows a cabinet meeting on Tuesday at which senior councillors approved recommendations for next year’s budget.

Union representatives and staff members spoke against the cuts at the cabinet meeting.

They said it would impact on morale and workloads, and expressed concern about changes in pay and conditions.

One councillor said the proposals would have an unfair effect on people in the borough’s rural wards.

The economy and environment scrutiny committee meets tomorrow, at 9.30am.

On Monday, at 4pm, the children and young people scrutiny group meets. The following day, the health and wellbeing scrutiny meeting is held at 9.30am and the neighbourhood services scrutiny group at 1.30pm.

The resources scrutiny is also due to meet later to discuss the proposals.

The recommendations will be discussed again at the cabinet meeting on February 22, before the budget is finalised on March 3.

All meetings are open to the public.
