THE electricity firm responsible for Darlington's power network claims there is no connection between a number of power cuts over the past few weeks.

Much of the town centre was without power for about an hour from 11am this morning.

Areas known to be affected were Priestgate, the Cornmill Centre, Coniscliffe Road, Victoria Road and Skinnergate.

A spokeswoman for CE Electric, the parent company of NEDL, said 964 properties were affected.

Work is underway to restore the fault, and is expected to continue into tomorrow.

The spokeswoman added: "The power supply should not be affected during the repairs."

She said there appeared to be no relation between today's power cut and earlier ones.

One man, who works in the town centre and wished to remain anonymous, said: "There have been at least four in the last two weeks. Every time it happens it brings work to a standstill."

On social networking site Twitter, Darlington MP Jenny Chapman, whose office is on Coniscliffe Road, said: "Office power cut again today. What's going on?"
