A FREE book containing personal memories from Darlington people of life on the Home Front will be available from today.

What We Did In The War will be launched by Darlington Mayor, Councillor Eleanor Lister, at the Crown Street library.

It has been produced through a BBC project called The People's War, which Darlington libraries supported last year.

The project secured £7,000 of Heritage Lottery funding to produce and publish 1,000 copies of the book.

Free copies of the book will be distributed to the public from the library, but the organisers of the project are keen to ensure those people who contributed memories, information and memorabilia for the book go to the launch day to pick up a copy.

Copies will also be distributed to Darlington schools, and some will be kept at the library.

Councillor Lee Vasey, cabinet member for leisure services, said: "This book is an excellent way of preserving important historical information and experiences from a time when this country was at war."

For more information about how to obtain a copy of the book, contact the library on (01325) 349610.
