A PLAN to invest £57m in three schools in Darlington is progressing, according to a council report.

In November it was announced that the money would be spent on improvements to Branksome, Longfield and Hurworth schools.

Next week, councillors will meet to discuss the progress of the spending plan.

A report, prepared for Darlington Borough Council's children and young people's scrutiny committee, outlines that the following developments have taken place: *Visits scheduled for school and council representatives to visit other schools which have benefited from the Government scheme.

*A team has been formed within the council responsible for consultation and project management.

*A feasibility study has been commissioned on all three school sites, to assess how the money can be best spent.

The improvements across the three schools are expected to consist of Their assumption is for 50 per cent new build, 35 per cent refurbishment and 15 per cent redecoration.

The report, which will be discussed at the meeting, on Monday, January 11, states: "New school buildings should be ready for use from late in 2012, or early 2013."

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, which will take place in town hall, from 4pm.
