GREEN-fingered residents beat the November gloom by doing a spot of bulb planting in preparation for Spring.

Residents and school children in the Harrowgate Hill area of Darlington rolled up their sleeves to brighten up their neighbourhood.

The event was organised by local councillor Mark Burton, with help from Coun Jenny Chapman and the Mayor of Darlington Coun Jim Ruck.

Pupils from Longfield and Harrowgate Hill schools and children from St Marks pre-school also took part.

Officers from Darlington Borough Councils Street Scene department also lent a hand.

Coun Burton said: "We joined forces to plant thousands of bulbs to help bring a splash of colour to Harrowgate Hill next spring.

"Although the results of all the hard work aren't visible yet, come spring there should be some wonderful displays of flowers growing along the verges.

"Id like to give a big thank you to everyone, including Street Scene and our park ranger, who took time out of their busy days to help make this event a huge success."
