VETERAN Hull City striker Dean Windass has agreed to become Darlington’s assistant manager.

Windass was always Quakers boss Colin Todd’s first choice to be number two, but as the 40-year-old continues to attract interest from other clubs, Todd has been forced to wait.

Todd said yesterday afternoon: “I have two or three names that I’m considering (for number two). We will try and move that forward when I get back from holiday.”

Reports in Scotland yesterday claimed Windass had already been named as the new assistant manager at Quakers.

Those were premature, but last night he accepted Todd’s offer to move to The Northern Echo Darlington Arena where he will combine playing with coaching duties.

Windass has not yet signed a contract with Quakers and the deal must be confirmed with the club’s administrators.

He is still wanted by Gillingham.

However, the League One newcomers cannot offer a coaching role and see Windass only as a player.

The North Ferriby-born forward is keen to begin his coaching career and applied for the managers jobs at both Aberdeen and Chesterfield.

He was also wanted Down Under with three Australian A-League clubs interested.

Todd begins a holiday today but will stay in contact with Quakers and intends to examine the list of players available on free transfers that will be released this week by the Football League.
