HERITAGE lovers can delve into the past which shaped their community as a Darlington library marks Local History Month with a series of events.

Exhibitions and talks are on offer throughout May in the Centre for Local Studies, Crown Street Library, for people who want to find out more about the life and times of Darlington characters.

An exhibition detailing the life and works of Hurworth mathematician William Emerson will be on display until Thursday, May 28.

Born in Hurworth in 1701, the son of the village schoolmaster, Emerson produced works on trigonometry, mechanics, algebra and astronomy.

On Saturday, local historian Jean Kirkland will be giving a talk on The Wrightsons of Hurworth and Neasham at 2pm. Tickets are £2.

Teesside University lead an interactive workshop on 19th Century Morality; Marriage, Divorce and Wife Sales on Tuesday May 19. Local case studies will be used and the event is expected to provoke some lively discussion.
