DARLINGTON Football Club’s only known potential saviour has threatened to walk away from his offer for the club following Dave Penney’s resignation.
Raj Singh had hoped to tie up a bid for the administration- hit Quakers last week until a deadline for offers for the club was extended by two weeks.
Singh, the former vicechairman, wanted a speedy resolution to the issue so management and player contracts could be finalised.
The Teesside-born businessman made his bid for the club on April 20, the day administrators initially set as a deadline for offers.
But they extended the deadline until next Tuesday, with only one other offer rumoured to have been made.
On Monday, Mr Singh withdrew his initial offer but said he was still prepared to talk to administrators and former club chairman George Houghton.
As a result of Penney’s resignation and confirmation yesterday as Oldham Athletic’s new manager, as well as receiving very few updates from the administrators, Singh said he was considering ending his association with the club.
He said: “It is getting pretty close. I would love to do something there but it’s harder and harder with every day that goes past.”
Singh said since he made the bid for the club nearly 11 days ago, he had received only one phone call from the administrators’ office and one email.
He added: “I suppose Dave Penney’s resignation is the first step in the demise of the club. That is what is happening.
Now it’s inevitable that the players will leave.
“The general public are frustrated. You are frustrated.
There are no statements coming out from the administrators.
“It is their duty to keep people in the loop. We had a meeting with them last Monday. I have had one phone call from the young apprentice and one email. That is hardly the way to go forward and to sort out the mess.”
Houghton appointed the administrators Brackenbury Clark & Co in February after the club had amassed debts of £5m.
He still owns the club stadium, meaning he has remained tied in the takeover talks.
Houghton had also been talking to other companies including, Otis Lifts and Schultz Academy regarding a possible bid for the company.
However, there are no other known bidders for the club, with only one other person rumoured to be interested.
Neither the club administrators, nor Mr Houghton were available for comment last night.
