RUNNERS and cancer survivors are being invited to take part in a North-East town’s first 24-hour relay event which will raise money for Cancer Research.

The Relay for Life takes place at the Eastbourne Sports Complex on Saturday and Sunday September 19 and 20.

It is hoped that 15 teams of between ten and 12 people will take part in the 24-hour relay around the centre's athletics track from 2pm on Saturday, September 19.

Organisers are aiming to raise £15,000 for the charity through the event.

Cancer survivors are also invited to attend to complete the opening lap of the relay and organisers would also like to hear from entertainers to create a family atmosphere.

A meeting of those wishing to help or form teams will be held at the indoor bowling club next to Morrisons Supermarket, North Road, Darlington on Tuesday(may 5) at 6.30pm.

Marion Perry, who has survived breast cancer, is chairwoman of logistics for the organising committee.

She said: "This is the first year that the Relay for Life in Darlington has been staged, although it has been held for several years in other towns.

"We are appealing for support from people willing to help organise the relay and, of course, from anyone wishing to join a team.

“It is open to men, women and children of all ages and abilities and they can walk, jog or even cycle around the track.

“Wheelchair participants and children in pushchairs are also welcome. The only stipulation is that there must be at least one member of each team on the track throughout the 24 hours of the event.”

The event will be supported by the Wild West Legends, who will set up a mock saloon at the Eastbourne Complex.
