LIBRARIES in Darlington are setting up a delivery services to allow self-isolating users to access its books.

Library buildings are closed as part of efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus.

But Darlington Libraries has set up the interim delivery service, which is available to all existing users over the age of 60.

It is hoped the service will help minimise loneliness for people who are self-isolating at home during the pandemic.

Councillor Andy Keir, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for local services, said:“We’re conscious our older residents may be feeling particularly lonely or isolated at this difficult time and hope that this delivery service will go some way to help minimise that.

“We would ask people to share the details with anyone you know who may benefit and encourage them to take advantage of this service, with deliveries starting from Monday (23 March).

“Our drivers will follow guidance from the government when making deliveries, but delivery slots are limited so will need to be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This is just one example of how we as a council are working hard to maintain services and help our residents, working together we can get through this.”

Library users can request the delivery of 10 books to their home. Deliveries will be made from Monday and then collected or swapped four weeks later.

Books will be selected by staff based on the users’ reading interests.

To request a delivery call the library on 01325 349610.

Library users who may already have books have also been reassured there will be no fines for overdue books.

Other library users can also access a wide range of eBooks and eAudiobooks via Darlington Libraries online services. To find out more and how to sign up log onto the website at: www2.darlington.gov.uk You can also follow us on Facebook @DarlingtonLibraries or on Twitter @DarlLibs
