AN ART show hoping to make people rethink the images around them is coming to Darlington.

Female-led art group the Blimey! Collective, including artists Carol Sommer, Amanda Marshall, Nicola Golightly and Vicky Holbrough, are bringing an exhibition on the representation of women to Darlington Crown Street Art Gallery on Saturday, March 14 at 6pm to 8pm.

The exhibition includes an artists talk, short film screening and access to the works, revolving around embroidered patches that have been created with the community over a series of events.

The Northern Echo:

Blimey! Lucretia responds to The Power and the Virtue: Guido Reni’s Death of Lucretia, a previous exhibition at The Bowes Museum, which looks at Lucretia’s role in Roman society. Lucretia is a fictional character who takes her own life after being raped by the King’s son.

“We hope that people will consider the images around them, whether that is going to a museum or the in representations of women in the media. We want people to question and consider,” Ms Holbrough. 43, said.

“It is evident by the work of the exhibition, through the story the patches built, how people feel.

“Some are subtle but others are hard hitting. It has been amazing to be able to make a space for people and to have others come to see their work.”

Blimey! Lucretia is in partnership with Creative Darlington and The Bowes Museum.
