HUNDREDS of young people have been rewarded for their good work in the community at an annual awards ceremony.

Darlington Civic Theatre last night hosted the 12th annual Vibe Awards, which recognise the achievements of young people, aged between eight and 19 in the borough.

More than 250 nominations were received in the different categories.

Each of the nominees was presented with a certificate, recognising their hard work.

Strictly Dance Fever star Darrien Wright also performed at the ceremony.

Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for children's services, said: "I think it's really good that we're able to celebrate the achievements of young people in this way and the young people here have made a tremendous effort in a number of different areas.

"I think it's really important that we have events like these to praise young people, much like we do in other areas of life.

"I think that sometimes the kids in this town get a bit of a knock and that's wrong.

"If you speak to young people in this town you find a lot of good in them and something like the Vibe Awards is the way to really celebrate the positive aspects if the vast majority of young people.

"The awards have become a bit of an institution - I want to see them continue."
