Dave Penney refused to use the late line-up changes as an excuse for Darlington's sub-standard display on Saturday.
Four-goal striker Pawel Abbott hurt his knee in the warm-up before the game with Peterborough United and goalkeeper David Stockdale injured his shoulder in training on Friday.
Abbott's place went to Gregg Blundell whose place on the bench was taken by Chris Palmer, who had been expecting to watch the match from the stands, while Stockdale was replaced by Andy Oakes.
Penney called up youth team keeper Scott Pocklington to take Oakes' place on the bench, but the manager had been hoping to make an emergency loan signing as he wanted Pocklington to play for the reserves instead.
Darlington's second string were at Jarrow in the Newton Moor Durham Challenge Cup on Saturday and young keeper Josh Moody was forced to play despite feeling under the weather.
"We were chasing round all Friday trying to get a keeper to sit on the bench as we wanted Scott to play for the reserves as Josh was ill," said Penney.
"Then Pawel hurt his knee in the warm-up which meant we started with Gregg, who is a different type of player to Pawel.
"It did affect our preparations but we should still have played better than we did in the first half when we were poor. In the second half we changed things a bit, we wanted the full-backs to get on the ball more, and it worked. We started passing better and went on 1-0 up, but then we went down to ten men and we were hanging in there."
Darlington's reserves won 11-1 at Jarrow with first year pro Shaun Reay scoring a hat-trick.
Also on the scoresheet was Ollie Moss (2), Patrick Collins (2), Scott Hunter (2), Dan Riley and Liam O'Mahoney.
