DARLINGTON'S severe shortage of lollipop men and women is partly caused by speeding drivers, a councillor has claimed.

Darlington Borough Council struggle to recruit school crossing wardens - as they are officially known - with a number of children's crossing points currently unstaffed.

Councillor Cyndi Hughes, of Park East ward, believes the wardens are crucial for residents young and old.

Stanhope Road's crossing warden is absent until November due to a scheduled operation - but has not been replaced.

Coun Hughes has warned that the area is a "serious accident waiting to happen".

"I spoke with John Buxton, director of environment, who indicated that the problem isn't with finance for a replacement, but with the replacement himself or herself," she said.

"People are simply not coming forward to take up crossing guard positions in Darlington.

"I would suggest that the pay-scale may not be right for the level of commitment expected by the borough council - and the utter lack of respect some drivers show doesn't help.

"I had a long conversation with a crossing guard at my surgery last Friday. She had many complaints about the speed and lack of respect that drivers show to her.

"I have also asked that a replacement be sought urgently for Stanhope Road. This is a danger spot just waiting for a serious accident to occur."

Coun Hughes also suggested a permanent solution on Stanhope Road, such as a zebra crossing. However, a council spokesman said the road layout rules that out.

The spokesman added that police checks would take six weeks, making it difficult to get a temporary warden.

He said: "It is always difficult for us to recruit school crossing wardens, particularly with the jobs involving early morning and mid-afternoon work.

"We presently have five permanent vacancies and would be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in filling what are important roles in the community."

The vacancies are at Haughton Road, Yarm Road, Longfield Road and two mobile patrols. Pay starts at £6.61 an hour and applicants must be 18 or over. To apply, call 01325-388783
