A FORMER pub which played a part in Darlington FC's rise into the football league could be converted into flats.
The Forge Tavern, in Prescott Road, Darlington, has been empty for two years.
Plans have been submitted to pull down the pub, on the corner of Nestfield Street, in Albert Hill, and replace it with flats.
A similar application for the site was approved by councillors two years ago.
The Campaign for Real Ale fought to save the pub because of its history in the town.
A football team called Darlington Forge Albion was run from the pub from the start of the 20th Century.
When Darlington FC ran into financial difficulties during the First World War, Forge Albion paid off the debts and completed the main East stand at Feethams.
The flats would be built in three storeys, and include a mix of one and two-bedroomed apartments.
