A DENTAL nurse from Darlington has won a place on a pioneering course which could help to cut waiting times for orthodontic patients.
Dawn Lee will become one of the country's first orthodontic therapists when she finishes her training.
She is completing a 45-week course that will lead to a diploma in orthodontic therapy from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
She has completed a month of core training in Leeds Dental Institute and is now finishing training under supervision at Falchion Orthodontics, in Darlington, where she has worked since 2004.
She fought off competition from more than 100 people to win one of ten places on the course.
The 29-year-old will be able to take an active role in orthodontic care.
She said: "I can't believe how much I am enjoying the course. It is great."
Orthodontist Ian Lund, who works at Falchion Orthodontists and is supervising Ms Lee, said: "Orthodontic therapists will be able to assist dentists in carrying out orthodontic treatment and provide some aspects of the treatment itself, working to the treatment plan of the orthodontist.
"For a long time, there has been a shortage of specialist orthodontists in the North-East.
"Dawn will make a huge difference to the orthodontic service we provide to the people of Darlington and the surrounding areas.
