PARENTS of children excluded from school have been warned they could be fined if youngsters are caught in a public place during school hours.
Parents or carers of pupils can be fined up to £100 if their children are found outside school on the first five days of their suspension.
Darlington Borough Council's wardens, education welfare officers and the police have the power to issue fixed penalty notices under the new Education and Inspection Act.
If a child is excluded, their school is expected to provide work for the first five days - and the pupil is obliged to complete it, under the supervision of parents, or another appropriate adult.
Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for children's services, said: "It is vitally important for pupils to attend school and the vast majority of families are aware of that.
"If children are excluded for any reason, it does not mean that they get to take a break from their education. It is essential that everyone ensures that education is maintained."
