FORMER mayors have voiced their opposition to plans for an elected mayor in Darlington.
The former mayors, from both sides of the political spectrum, gathered with members of the 'Say No' campaign in Darlington town centre yesterday.
They believe that the proposals for an elected mayor would undermine the political neutrality of the ceremonial position. A referendum on whether Darlington should have an elected mayor is being held on September 27.
Alan Charlton, spokesman for the 'Say No' group, said: "I believe these people do a fine job, the mayoral system of senior members of the council becoming mayor irrespective of party politics works very well.
"They all have tremendous experience in the running of the town.
"Darlington's system is considered up and down the country to be the best model for having a town mayor."
