THE first plans for a historic pub, which had been expected to be demolished, have been revealed.
Mitchells and Butlers have bought the White Horse Hotel, in Harrowgate Hill, Darlington, which had been earmarked for conversion into housing.
This week the company, which runs hundreds of pubs across the country, submitted plans to Darlington Borough Council for the new-look pub.
Mitchell and Butlers plans to turn the pub into one of its Sizzling Pub outlets.
The proposals include a new porch and entrance area on the front of the building, with new lighting.
It also features a patio area, including seating, tables and a large umbrella.
In its planning application, the company said: "Mitchell and Butler Retail is planning to undertake an extensive refurbishment of the property.
"The majority of the works are internal and are aimed at improving the layout of the property and the food offer and do not require planning permission.
"The proposed external works will improve and add interest to the entrance of the property."
The landmark pub had been due for demolition, when plans to build 55 apartments were approved in November 2005.
Local opponents campaigned to save the pub.
The premises closed last year, but it is expected to re-open later this year after Mitchell and Butlers bought the site and were granted a licence.
