A MAN who was to appear before magistrates on a theft charge, yesterday, phoned the court to say he had overdosed on prescription drugs.
John James Murray, of Grange Road, Darlington, was arrested on suspicion of stealing two CCTV cameras worth £400, on July 17.
The 27-year-old's case was scheduled to be heard at Darlington Magistrates' Court, but proceedings were adjourned after he contacted the court to say he had swallowed more than 20 codeine tablets, and seven units of temazepam.
His solicitor, Graham Ablett, told magistrates: "About 15 minutes ago, Mr Murray phoned and told me he had taken an overdose of medication.
"I have no way of knowing whether or not that was the case, but I obviously spoke to him at length about whether this was genuine or not.
"We felt we had no option but to phone for an ambulance.
"He is now on his way to Darlington Memorial Hospital. In the fullness of time we will find out what the situation is."
The case was adjourned until Thursday, at 10am. Mr Murray was given bail on the condition that he does not approach the Raby Street area of Darlington, or enter any shops within the town's ring road.
