A STUDENT appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with possession of 173 ecstasy tablets with intent to supply.
Newton Aycliffe magistrates heard that Andrew Irvine Welsh was caught with the drugs when police searched his Aycliffe Village home, on May 23.
Rob Mochrie, for Welsh, said that the 20-year-old Manchester University student had become "embroiled in the university party scene".
"There is no suggestion that Mr Welsh was going to supply his friends for financial gain," he said. "He was purchasing the drugs for his friends and was going to give them their share."
The court heard that he had paid £400 for 200 tablets, but had already taken some himself.
Welsh, of Millfields, Aycliffe Village, admitted possession of ecstasy with intent to supply and possession of cannabis. The case was adjourned for sentencing at Durham Crown Court.
