CHILDREN turned pieces of scrap into a variety of artwork at an annual holiday club.

About 40 youngsters in the Branksome area of Darlington took part in the fourth holiday club at Branksome Community Centre.

The week-long activities followed the Scripture Union's Waste Watchers programme, in which the theme for the week was transformation.

The children, who were aged five to 13, took part in a wide variety of activities during the week.

They included using aerobics to transform a dirty house into a spotless one. Each day, points were awarded in exchange for bags of rubbish.

At the end of the week, the children turned the waste materials into decorative items, such as murals, crosses, a wedding cake and animals.

The youngsters also wrote prayers and brought in jokes and pictures.

They were visited by Darlington Mayor Councillor Marian Swift and her daughter, Councillor Jenny Chapman, to present prizes to the groups with the best creatures.
