Darlington youngster David Stockdale will be handed an opportunity to impress tonight when he replaces Andy Oakes for the Carling Cup tie at Barnsley.

Stockdale, 21, caught the eye during the second half of Quakers' win over Wrexham on Saturday after coming off the bench to replace Oakes, who was sent off for a professional foul.

The reserve keeper made two eye-catching saves in an impressive performance although he will be hoping for a quieter evening tonight when Oakes serves a one-match ban.

Although Oakes, one of Penney's 12 signings during the summer, is likely to regain his place at Accrington Stanley on Saturday, the manager admits he sees potential in Stockdale.

He said: "I thought David was excellent on Saturday. We've said before, we think he has something. He is only 21, he's a good size, he can kick it and as we saw on Saturday he can make saves too.

"There's a lot there to work with, we think a lot of him and there's a lot more to come.

"Ideally we would send him out on loan so he could get more games under his belt but he's going to be playing for us on Tuesday."

Ex-Swansea City keeper Oakes made a handful of errors in pre-season and then further blotted his copybook with Saturday's red card.

Asked if he would consider dropping Oakes if Stockdale were to continue his good form, Penney said: "Time will tell. It depends how David plays when he comes into the team but certainly, if he plays like that again, Andy has a fight to get back in the team.

"But I thought the whole back four were excellent on Saturday. They covered each other well and David did well when he came on.

"I was pleased with Foster too, anything that came into the box he headed out.

"He's the captain and he marshalled everybody, made sure everybody did their jobs.

"People like him and Tim Ryan hate conceding goals, they pride themselves on keeping clean sheets and that's a good trait to have.

"It's important that we keep clean sheets because we know we've got quality players like Julian Joachim at the other end who can score goals on the break."

As well as Stockdale's inclusion, Penney will make at least one other change with centre-back Alan White starting as on loan Ian Miller is not permitted to play in the competition by Ipswich Town.

Ryan suffered a slight knock on Saturday so John Brackstone is on standby.

Barnsley got their season off to a dreadful start, losing 4-1 at home to Coventry City, and are expected to hand Saturday's line-up a chance to redeem themselves.
