STOP smoking experts in County Durham and Darlington have reported a slight increase in people taking up help to quit.
Summer weather is contributing to smokers' habits, as it is still easy enough to smoke outdoors, they say.
Darlington and Durham Dales health improvement lead for tobacco and smoking cessation, Darcy Brown, said: "We are slightly up on this time last year, with a steady flow of people wanting to give up.
"Smokers who are attempting to quit say it is easier now smoking indoors is not permitted.
"Many of those trying to stop are now complaining about the number of people smoking in the street."
Darlington and County Durham primary care trusts are planning a smoke-free push in rural areas.
Stop smoking experts will attend country shows at St John's Chapel on August 25, Wolsingham on September 1 and 2 and Stanhope on September 8 and 9.
The public will be able to have their blood pressure checked, as well as being offered lung capacity and carbon monoxide levels.
Advice on quitting and nicotine replacement therapies will also be on offer.
