HIGH ROW
REGARDING N Campling's comments about High Row, Darlington (HAS, Page 11, Aug 7).
I walked along High Row last Sunday and, frankly, it was in a disgusting state. The whole project, only recently completed, is covered in dirt and stains which have built up in such a short time.
The borough council's street cleaning staff really do the best they can with the resources and equipment they have. However, pedestrian staff can only pick up litter - they can't remove spilt beer, chewing gum and grease from takeaway food.
The council needs to invest in mobile, high-powered cleaning equipment to clean High Row, the town centre and our busier streets. This needs to be coupled with a robust litter enforcement action. I hope that this can be addressed.

NOW that the revamp of Darlington town centre has been finished, could I suggest a statue be erected of the leader of the borough council, Councillor John Williams - sitting on a donkey and facing its tail?
The inscription underneath should read (with apologies to Winston Churchill): "Never in the history of Darlington have so many had to put up with so much, for so long, from so few."
