DARLINGTON manager Dave Penney last night made his sixth signing since the end of the season after completing a move for goalkeeper Andy Oakes.
After passing a medical, the 30-year-old agreed to join Darlington on a two-year deal after failing to earn a new contract at Swansea City. He made just six appearances for the Swans last season following his summer switch from Walsall.
Exeter City were keen to sign the former Derby County goalkeeper. But, following the Grecians' failure to get promoted from the Conference last month, Oakes' desire to remain in the Football League has worked in Darlington's favour.
Oakes has made little over 100 appearances during a decade of professional football, 27 of which were in the Premiership with Derby County.
"The signing of Andy means we now have three goalkeepers, which is good competition," said assistant manager Martin Gray.
"Sam (Russell) and David (Stockdale) were told that we were looking to bring in another goalkeeper, and I'm sure it will keep them on their toes."
Russell's future, however, remains uncertain and he has yet to agree a new contract with the club. The arrival of Oakes has cast further doubts over Russell's situation, with the goalkeeper considering his options after becoming a free agent.
* Bolton manager Sammy Lee insists the club are doing everything in their power to persuade goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to sign a new deal amid interest from Sunderland.
*Claudio Ranieri moved a step closer taking over as Man City manager last night when he quit his job with Parma.
