DARLINGTON are preparing to make a move for released Swansea City goalkeeper Andy Oakes.

The 30-year-old was freed by the Swans this month and Quakers boss Dave Penney has registered his interest in the former Derby County man.

First choice goalkeeper Sam Russell has yet to commit his future to Darlington, despite being offered a one-year contract.

Only Russell and last season's skipper Clark Keltie remain out of contract at the 96.6TFM Darlington Arena.

Second choice goalkeeper David Stockdale has signed a one-year deal, and while Russell's future remains uncertain, Penney is lining up Oakes.

The Northwich-born player has already rejected the chance to sign for Exeter City in the Conference as he is keen to remain in the Football League.

Darlington are leading the chase to sign Oakes, who made just six appearances for Swansea last season after joining the club on a free transfer from Walsall last summer.

Penney is also considering a move for former Quakers defender Richard Hope, who was released by beaten play-off finalists Shrewsbury yesterday.

The 29-year-old, also a target for York City and Chesterfield, captained the Shrews last season.

However, Shrewsbury boss Gary Peters has deemed Hope surplus to requirements.

Darlington have been in contact with Teesside-born Hope, who would prefer a return to the North-East following York's failure to gain promotion.

Hope was keen on a move to Bootham Crescent after a successful season with the Minstermen in 2003.

And, while Chesterfield can offer League One football, Hope would be prepared to remain in League Two with Quakers.

The former Blackburn defender made 68 appearances for Darlington, before joining Northampton in 1998.

"Richard has been a great captain and the dressing has been superb," said Peters.

"He's also been away from his family for two years as they have remained in the North-East."

Penney has wasted little time in reshaping his Darlington squad, having released 11 players and signed five.

However, the Quakers boss has yet to receive a decision from Keltie, who is mulling over a one-year deal.

The midfielder is considering his options after being stripped of the captaincy following the arrival of Scunthorpe defender Steve Foster, who will captain Darlington next season.

Meanwhile, another Quakers target, Dale Tonge, has joined Rotherham United on a two-year deal from Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley.
