Ossett Town 3 Darlington 1 Darlington were knocked out of the Integro Doodson Sports League Cup last night by 3-1 at First Division club Ossett Town – but at least Amar Purewal came through his comeback game without any ill effects.
Unsurprisingly with the club’s focus firmly on promotion, manager Martin Gray didn’t field any of the team that started last Saturday’s win at Salford, but there was a first game of the season for striker Purewal, while defender Alan White was given a surprise recall. New signings Nathan Evans and Harvey Saunders were also given outings.
Ossett, who beat Spennymoor in the last round, started the game well and went close through Luke Mangham, before they took the lead when Joseph Ojo followed up after Josh Moore headed towards goal.
Ossett nearly got a second, but Darlington keeper Jim Provett pulled off a good stop from a Max Philis shot. However, the keeper had no chance when Josh Moore scored from close range.
Quakers were better in the second half, in which Purewal went off just before the hour. However, Ossett made sure of a last eight place when Cameron Lyn beat Provett with a rasping 30 yarder.
Teenager Lewis Walton scored a late consolation for Quakers.
Team: Provett, Morley, Walton, Harker, Nowakowski, White, Evans, Wheeler-Andrews, Purewal, Saunders, Smith.
Subs: Milburn, Jonty Gray, Nelson, Padariau, Stephenson
