STUDENTS at Darlington College have been given firefighter training for their course.
The students attended the Serco International Fire Training Centre (IFTC), at Durham Tees Valley Airport, as part of their National Certificate in Public Services qualification.
The morning was spent in the classroom learning about aircraft types and different kinds of fires that can break out on planes, such as in the cockpit, gantry and toilets.
In the afternoon, they experienced the training ground, tackling real fires and using equipment, including smoke hoods and fire bags.
Matt Bullimore, 17, of Colburn, who wants to become a firefighter, said: "I have always been fascinated by fire and have learnt a lot at the centre.
"I would really like to join the Navy and learn my trade there and then join the regular fire service."
Shaun King, 17, of Newton Aycliffe, said: "I was considering the police force but have changed my mind after coming here. I really want to be a firefighter now."
Serco IFTC's Tim Oakes said: "It's always a pleasure to work with young and enthusiastic people and that's what this group demonstrated.
"Hopefully, in the short time spent with us, it gives them an insight into the Airport Fire Service and some of the risks that may be encountered."
