A FAMILY business, which was set up by a former wartime fireman and spanned three generations, is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
Joe Simon launched the business after the Second World War when he sold velvet curtains in the region's markets.
The venture flourished and has since expanded - and Direct Fabrics is now based in a Darlington warehouse.
Joe's grandson, Edward, who runs the business, said: "It has just escalated and we ended up here in Darlington about ten years ago."
Joe had been a fireman during the war in his hometown of Leeds.
In 1947, he saw a business opportunity in fabrics and commuted to Stockton to sell his wares on the market.
He expanded to other markets in the North-East and his son, Martin, helped in the business.
Joe, who celebrates his 99th birthday this year, handed over the reins to Martin.
He and his wife, Anne, headed the business until Martin died four years ago. But Edward and his elder brother, Philip, continued the family tradition.
Edward has been involved with the firm since he was 12 but Philip has now returned to university to study veterinary science.
The company offers a full bespoke service, including measuring and fitting. It sells curtains, pillows, fabrics and curtain poles.
It has had several bases and is now based in Progress Way, Darlington.
