A FRAIL pensioner took his own life because he was frightened of losing his independence, an inquest heard yesterday.
Frank Barry Shutt, 82, died from an overdose of prescription drugs at his home, in Carlton Avenue, Darlington, last October.
His daughter, Jean Wrapp, told the hearing, at Bishop Auckland General Hospital, that his health was deteriorating. She said: "He was fearful of losing his dignity and self-respect. He had a fear of losing his independence."
Durham deputy coroner Brenda Davidson recorded a verdict that Mr Shutt took his own life.
