A CONSERVATION group has come together to provide restoration work to one of the town’s most scenic pathways.
Residents of Victoria Embankment, in Darlington, turned out over the weekend to help breathe new life into historic bollards lining the promenade by the River Skerne.
Councillor Paul Harman, who helped organise the group, said: “This is a favourite walk for thousands of people.
“But the bollards are over 100 years old and were looking a bit tired and neglected.
“Now they are shining again under a protective layer of paint.”
The Conservation Group has plans for further restoration work, and has already held talks with Darlington Borough Council officers about maintaining lime trees along the Embankment.
The group is also looking to ask the council for better street lighting, designed to complement the look of the historic street.
Councillor Harman, who is himself a resident of the Embankment, is pleased with the work that has been done.
“It is really satisfying to find that so many people will come out to help do something practical to make their local area look even better,” he said.
“When you suggest something simple and organise it well, Darlington people really do enjoy stepping up to make things better.”
