A SNAPSHOT of time has been captured for posterity thanks to student plumbers who wanted to help their local Brownie group.

Darlington College students fabricated a time capsule using a plastic pipe after being approached by the local Brownie troupe.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the organisation, the 22-strong 26th St Herbert’s Darlington Brownies wanted to preserve a host of artefacts in a time capsule including photos, badges and predictions of what the future will look like in a century’s time.

Assistant Brownie leader Sandra Hakin said: “I looked online for time capsules and they were nearly £200 to buy.

“But we really wanted to have something that could be opened in a 100 years time.”

Fortunately a member of her church, Colin Leek, is a student support worker at Darlington College and he approached the construction department for help.

He said: “The plumbers did a great job with a 110mm waste pipe which they sealed at one end and fashioned an air tight screw top at the other.

“It is certainly as good as anything you would buy off the internet and we used some scrap pipe.”

Student plumber Jordan Akers, 17 of Barnard Castle, said: “It is great that the college could do something to help the local community.”

The time capsule will be buried at a secret location with details of its whereabouts being included in church records with instructions to open it in 100 years time.
