MORE than 10,000 soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War have been remembered in a touching tribute created by students.
Pupils at Carmel College, in Darlington, created a special poppy to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
The artwork, which is made up of 100 small poppies, features the names of 12,355 soldiers who fought in the Durham Light Infantry and the Northumberland Hussars during the war.
Students from across the school submitted more than 160 designs for the poppy and around a dozen year 10 students helped create the memorial, with help from textile teacher Amanda Waltenberg.
She said: "We got so engrossed in doing it and remembering all these people so we were more than pleased with how it turned out - I thought it was beautiful.
"The students got really involved with it. One girl said she really wanted to get involved with it but she couldn't draw, so she took a memory stick with all the names on and formatted them all.
"I am really proud of them all."
The poppy has taken pride of place during the school’s week of commemoration.
