A DARLINGTON gift shop has received a gift of its own after winning a competition.
In the run up to Christmas, Distinct Darlington – formed to encourage and promote trade in the town centre – offered a prize to the shop with the finest festive window display.
Now, independently-owned Wheeler’s gift and home ware shop, in Bondgate, is celebrating after scooping the £100 shopping voucher.
The shop, run by mother and daughter team, Dawn and Donna Wheeler, saw off competition from some of the biggest names in the retail industry, to impress the panel of judges from House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer.
“We went for a very traditional window, with two trees and a red and green colour scheme," said Donna.
“There were greenery and fairy lights all around the window and the display was made up of very traditional gifts themed on children’s stories from years gone by.
“Winning the competition came as a total shock but we’re absolutely delighted.”
The judges also gave a special mention to Bliss Gifts, at Duke Street, which was voted runner-up.
Alex Hirst, manger of Distinct Darlington, said: “Darlington’s shops really pushed the boat out with their Christmas window displays and the judges had quite a task on their hands.
“However, Wheeler’s really impressed them with their attention to detail and the wonderfully nostalgic look of their window.”
