SHOPPERS in Darlington escaped injury yesterday when a hoarding protecting improvement works was blown down.
One of the hoardings around the Pedestrian Heart work in High Row, Darlington, was blown down by strong winds.
A number of other hoardings were also dragged down with it.
No one was hurt in the incident, which happened near the covered market at about 1pm, and workers soon put the screens back up.
One passer-by said: "One of the screens came right out and almost brought another one with it.
"There was nobody nearby, luckily, so no one was hurt. But it could have been nasty if someone had been passing."
A Darlington Borough Council spokesman said: "The hoardings are fixed so they should be able to withstand the elements.
"However, if anyone has any concerns about them they can contact Tim Bowers, the site agent for Birse Civils Ltd, the contractor responsible for the hoardings, on 07970-125381 or the council's customer call centre on 01325-388777.
