DARLINGTON has been named a Fairtrade town.
Fairtrade is an independent label that shows a product has been bought directly from producers in the developing world at a fair price.
Fairtrade towns are those that show a commitment to the products and to disadvantaged producers in the developing world.
Earlier this year, Darlington Borough Council announced only Fairtrade coffee would be used at its venues, including Stressholme Golf Club, the Dolphin Centre, the Arts Centre and the town hall.
The council also supported Fairtrade fortnight with a farmers' market stall.
The steering group has encouraged shops and other business in town to sell and use Fairtrade as much as possible.
Stephen Harker, cabinet member for consumer and environmental services, said: "It has taken a lot of hard work for the town to gain this recognition, but we have shown its commitment."
Darlington is the 213th Fairtrade town in the country. Others in the region include York, Northallerton, Newcastle, and Hartlepool.
